I don't think I could stop the four-letter words rolling from my mouth at these types of offers.Suzan Hardenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04600258874634909988noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5384027358660553150.post-90743347302940908852014-08-01T19:32:03.355-04:002014-08-01T19:32:03.355-04:00But she admitted she was looking for new clients a...But she admitted she was looking for new clients about the SUCCESSFUL self-published writers. And I'm thinking if someone's already making six figures, why does she need you?

This, exactly. It's amazing how many agents (and publishers) don't get that. All I can think of is that they're like the scammy e-mail spammers who deliberately make their pitch letters look ridiculous, with the bad grammar/spelling, awkward phrasing, and unbelievable stories. They do that to weed out the people who are too smart to fall for their crap. Anyone who replies to one of those letters is demonstrably dumb enough to take for every dollar they have.

It's got to be the same with agents like the one above. She's looking for indie pubbed writers who are successful enough that her fifteen percent would be a nice sized windfall, but too stupid to get that a tradpub deal would cost them big money. Because these days, I don't even know that someone being offered mid- to high-six-figures would be able to negotiate the unconscionable crap out of those New York book contracts, which would negate even the potential publicity/visibility factor of a big-advance New York marketing push on a book or three.

That's the only thing I can think of, honestly -- they're looking for the shallow end of the indie pool. :/

AngieAngiehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11920578701763415331noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5384027358660553150.post-73794108433422346602014-08-01T13:55:00.634-04:002014-08-01T13:55:00.634-04:00Yeah, I don't see any cognitive arguments comi...Yeah, I don't see any cognitive arguments coming out out the PHs either.

There was a trad pub consultant trolling TPV last night with the "Amazon's not your friend" BS. When I accused her of being a paid shill, her best comeback was I'm just a beginner and she doesn't talk to beginners. I also agree with Hugh Howey's latest post -- if the best they can say is, "They might be lying!" or "They're not your friend!" then they're really scraping the bottom of the argument barrel.

AngieAngiehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11920578701763415331noreply@blogger.com
